ACB Group’s innovative coating makes skating above freezing possible.
The fact that people in Winterwijk were already able to skate at the end of November — and could even continue skating when temperatures rose above freezing — is partly thanks to ACB Group.
The asphalt track is insulated from below with foam concrete, preventing heat from the ground from warming the surface. On top of that, ACB Group applies a white coating layer that insulates the asphalt from above and reflects sunlight.
The specially prepared track is then sprayed millimetre by millimetre with water. It only needs to freeze briefly for a solid layer of ice to form. Thanks to this process, skating remains possible even when temperatures climb above freezing.
This unique experiment has been featured in Flemish and Dutch media for several years in a row.
